Pain management is an important part of your healing process. As a patient, you have certain rights in regard to pain management.

Patients experiencing pain have the right to:
  • Be believed when they say they have pain.
  • Receive pain medication on a timely basis.
  • Know the risks, benefits and side effects of treatment.
  • Ask for changes in treatment if pain persists.
  • The key to getting the best pain relief is talking with your doctors and nurses about your pain. They will want to know how much pain you feel, where it is, and what it feels like. Only you know how you really feel. Don’t worry about getting “hooked” or “addicted” to pain medicines; this is very rare. There are times when it is not possible to completely relieve all pain.

Pain Intensity
You will be asked to help your doctors and nurses measure your pain by using one of the pain scales shown below:

Pain Medications
Medications may be given on an “as needed” basis when you ask for them or
on a regular schedule. Do not wait until pain is severe to ask for medication. If you do, it may be much harder to manage.

Good pain control may help you experience greater comfort while you recover. This in turn, will help you to start walking earlier, perform your breathing exercises better, and get your strength back quicker.
